DEVINE, Texas -- San Antonio firefighters are mourning the loss of one of their own following a deadly house fire early Friday morning.
A spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department said firefighter Matthew Whitley was found dead inside his mobile home in Devine. He was 31.
Whitely, a 10-year veteran, worked at Fire House 20 on the city's southeast side.
Whitley was following in the footsteps of his father, who has been with the San Antonio Fire Department for more than 30 years.
It was a surreal moment for Oralia Zamora and the rest of the Devine community.
"We ran out and we're like, 'Oh no, it's Matt's house,' But we didn't know he was inside," said Oralia Zamora, a neighbor and a friend.
Whitley always carried a smile and liked to fish on his days off. More than anything, he loved his career as a San Antonio firefighter.

Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown said, "It's really sad to do the job that he does and for this to be the (way) he goes out. It's pretty sad."
The Medina County Sheriff's Office and the Bexar County Fire Marshal are investigating.
Devine is about 30 miles southwest of San Antonio.
